Just a dog!

Published on

Yet another furry friend snatched away from us. Words are not enough for me to express the grief I feel. It is not just the grief of a young 3 year old , fiesty Indie dying on the street, but grief of a lovely life which could have been so much better lived. No matter how hard we try to keep these Indies safe, they are taken away from us in the most brutal manner.

Yes, some of the caregivers do take care of these furries. We are among the fortunate few who do, but how much is that care? Is filling water in the bowls, food once in a day which we try to provide during our busy days, enough for these lovable souls? Do they not deserve more time from us, some pets, some play, some deep talk, shared moments, shared solitude? Yes some of us are doing the best that we can do, no denying that. But have we ever thought about their wholesome fulfilment?

In a country of 1.3 billion people, many of whom do not get 2 square meals a day, it may seem ridiculous brooding over the lives of dogs lived and lost on the streets. But isn’t every life on this earth precious? And who’s to say which life is more precious?

After all, these hierarchies are also set by man himself, that humans are superior to the rest. We make the rules here, don’t we? We define who is superior, who is inferior, who rules the world, who just borrows space! In the end, we also decide who we kill, for pleasure, for food, or just driven by our indifference or callous behaviour.

After all, it was just a dog, they say.

Just a dog? I’ll tell you what a dog is. Miss two meals in a day, let the searing wind penetrate the wounds in your body at night when you sleep in the open, not having had water in 2 days, or maybe just a few sips here or there and then try to greet a human, jump for joy, wag your tail and remain happy and hopeful. Bet you can’t do it. Well, that’s what a canine truly is..Just a dog they say!
